Bill Johnson leads into an encounter with Jesus by encouraging us to return to our First Love. Bill refers to the church of Ephesus in Revelation 2, who operated in great spiritual authority, but lost their passion. Maturity can cause us to be impressed by our own growth. In every action, thought, and ambition, we are to first seek the dominion of a loving Father, until His nature flows through us. All growth is rewarded with pruning, and pruning occurs in listening. God is reducing us to the simplicity of devotion to Christ, because that’s where our strength is.
