I have the honor and privilege of sharing something deeply rooted in my heart and soul. I pray that you feel the same way about it: worship—pure, simple worship. This includes not only worshiping God with our hands and lifting our voices to Him, but living out worship in our daily lives—devotions to God, praying to God, and understanding the voice of God. I want you all to really focus, and I’m going to give you three keys that I believe can change not only your worship but everything you do with God. So, let’s get into this.
I want to ask you a question: Have you ever been hungry? No, not just for food—well, yes, for food—but I’m talking about a hunger that is profound. I’m referring to a hunger for the Word of God, for the presence of God, and for His touch. Follow me now. In John 6:35 (NIV), Jesus declared, «I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.» I believe we get caught up in the idea that if we read a little and pray a little every single day, we’re fine. But how many of you know that God has not called us to be surface-level? He’s called us to go deep with Him.
Consider this: A desperate man does not just ask for a taste; he eats until he is satisfied. But the good thing about the Lord is that you can always consume His Word and never tire of it. To be hungry for the things of God essentially means always wanting those things. How many of you know that when you get physically hungry, you will do anything to get food, especially if you haven’t eaten for a couple of hours? Think about what happens when you don’t eat. First, you get exhausted. Second, you might become grouchy. Third, you may feel sleepy. The list goes on and on regarding what occurs when you don’t eat and fill your body with the nutrients it needs.
The same applies to the Word of God. If you’re not in the Word, if you’re not digging deep into this beautiful gift God has left us, you will feel exhausted spiritually. You may act out in the flesh more and just be downright unhappy. It’s common—it’s truth. I want to encourage you to stay hungry for the Word. My first point is staying hungry for the Word. I believe this is essential not only for worship but for every aspect of your life. So, again, stay hungry.
My next point, which I believe is very vital in our walk with God and our worship life, is tapping into the well through worship. Turn with me now to John 4:13. Jesus said to her, «Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.» The woman then said to Him, «Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.»
Many of you know that story; it’s about the woman at the well. I want to take that story and explore its fundamentals. Consider, for instance, a well. A well is used to sustain and maintain a steady supply of water, even amidst a drought. You see, Jesus is our well in the harshest and darkest times of our lives. If you are not drawing from that well, you will feel it. You will feel exhausted, as if you are in the worst position you’ve ever been in. But if you truly understand that you need to tap into the sustaining presence of that well, things can change.
When we tap into the presence of true worship, the Holy Spirit maintains a steady flow of His sustaining presence in our lives. Tapping into the well through worship is something that many people miss because we can get lost in the sounds and sights—the blinding lights in our eyes, trust me, I know. How many of you realize it is Him who holds onto us while we worship, while we dig for that well? The Holy Spirit helps us see clearly the beauty and majesty of the King of Kings. Worshiping Him not only realigns our focus but brings refreshment, just as water does to the body.
So, I’m telling you, once you understand how to tap into the well of worship, your life can be transformed. I can tell you from experience that some of the best times I’ve had with the Lord are literally on my face, crying before Him, listening to either instrumental or worship music, and just waiting for His voice.
