David Diga Hernandez - How to Heal the Sick - Part III: Defeating Doubt
Doubt is an enemy of healing, and I want to teach you how to defeat that enemy. I’m going to show you how to overcome doubt. In this series, I’ve been discussing keys to the healing ministry, addressing those who believe that God has called them as vessels of His healing power on Earth, and I believe that’s you. However, in the healing ministry of Jesus, you will encounter doubt in many forms, and I want to show you how to handle doubt. I will demonstrate what Jesus did with doubt, and I know this will strengthen the healing ministry that God has given you.
In part two of this series, I really went down the line and answered the question, biblically speaking, of why some aren’t healed. I provided four biblical reasons as to why some are not healed. Now, even though someone may find these reasons in the Bible and mentally understand them, they may still struggle emotionally with the reality surrounding them—the reality of those who are not healed. That reality is what stirs those emotions because as you pray for the sick, there will be times when you lay hands on them and they are not healed. I’ve prayed for people who were not healed; I’ve prayed for people who died from the sicknesses that I rebuked. Does this mean that it’s not God’s will to heal? That’s not what I’m saying. It just means we have to leave room for the sovereignty of God. So, if you are someone who wrestles with those questions, take a look at what I taught in part two of this series, «How to Heal the Sick: Just Biblical Answers to the Question of Why Some Aren’t Healed.» Nevertheless, after you’ve wrestled with all the questions and gone back and forth in your mind with the information, you are faced with making a decision: how do you respond when what you experience seems to contradict what the Bible declares? Do you believe your experience because it’s happening, or do you believe the Bible?
This really is the issue for most people. I mean, I’ve prayed for people who wouldn’t even tell me what their sicknesses were. I don’t know how many times I asked, «What am I praying for?» They would say, «Just believe, just in faith.» I would ask, «Well, what do you have?» They’d reply, «I don’t have a sickness.» I’d then ask, «Well, what’s wrong with you?» They’d say, «There’s nothing wrong with me.» Then why are you in line for healing? «Just pray for me, ” they’d say. It gets really confusing. Why? Because they think that if they speak it, they’re causing it. But that’s not the type of superstition I’m talking about—superstition has no power. I’m talking about truth. We have to avoid the extreme of not naming it or walking around in paranoia. Acknowledging a sickness doesn’t mean I’m contributing to it with doubt. That’s not doubt; that’s just acknowledging the facts. Faith does not deny reality; it addresses reality.
In those instances where you find yourself wondering about the healing of someone that didn’t occur, you have to make the decision of ultimately trusting in the Word of God. Now, again, I dealt with more of the theology and technicalities, and some of the things that may help you mentally in part two of this series. In this one, I want to help you deal with the emotional aspect or the soul element of it—the part of you that acts as a barrier of fear, preventing you from ministering God’s healing power. So, never allow the miracles you don’t receive to prevent you from seeing the miracles you should receive. In other words, what God doesn’t do that you expect Him to do will not stop you from believing for what can be. Ultimately, nothing is impossible with God. Our partnership with the Lord comes down to something rather simple: I do the possible, He does the impossible. If I worship, His presence will be made manifest. If I preach, souls will be saved. If I give, He will bless. If I lay hands on the sick, He will heal them. It’s up to Him from there.
So again, while the questions may be addressed intellectually, we may still struggle with the emotional aspect of the problem. I can recall my own experience with doubt. When I was about eleven years old, I first saw two evangelists who were dynamic and powerful. One of them was very stoic, solemn, and serious, while the other was very joyful, loose, and quite funny—actually quite comedic. I wish I could share some stories, but time won’t allow it. I watched both of them, who were on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of personality. I thought God could use both of these men, who were so different from each other, and I realized then that it’s not about personality. Both of these men were surrendered in faith to the Holy Spirit. That’s when I knew that I knew that I knew—I know you’ve had moments like this—I was called to the healing ministry.
For years, I watched these men. One of them, the one who was more on the comedic side, developed Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease in which your muscles begin to deteriorate and it affects multiple systems of the body. I watched as this man went from using canes to move around to using a wheelchair, eventually becoming unable to move any part of his body on his own. Here’s the thing: this man was in the healing ministry; he prayed for the sick. I saw him from his wheelchair laying hands on the sick and God healing people. Then in my own ministry, I would see people healed of the same diseases that he was said to have.
