David Diga Hernandez - Receiving Financial Breakthrough
Right now, I’m going to address one of the most abused and controversial subjects in the Bible, and that is the subject of finances. Today, I’m talking about financial breakthrough. I know this topic has been altogether abused to manipulate God’s people, but that’s not what I’m going to do. We will address this subject in a biblical and practical way so that you can find freedom financially, as laid out in the Scriptures. Steven Montazuma is with me, as usual; he’s going to lead us in some worship right now, and then we’re going to get into this very practical, very helpful message. I believe you’re going to experience financial breakthrough.
As I stated at the beginning of the program, this is a controversial subject because it has been abused. However, I believe that the Bible provides us with a roadmap to financial prosperity. I am not a prosperity preacher; I do not believe that life should be lived without any trials or obstacles, nor do I believe that every believer needs to be super wealthy. I also do not necessarily think that wealth is a sign of God’s favor. Nevertheless, the Bible does offer us keys to biblical financial prosperity, and when you walk as the Lord intends with your finances, you will experience a breakthrough.
I know there are those who will tell you that if you send $1,000 today, you’ll be debt-free in 30 days. I believe that God blesses the giver, and I believe in sowing seeds into ministries, as I do it regularly myself. At the same time, I don’t believe it’s my place to promise people how God will bless them. Whenever I take an offering, whether it’s at Spirit Church or at an event, you’ll notice that I talk about souls. This is because I don’t believe that the church should be manipulated into giving. I don’t believe that you need to burden them with guilt or manipulate them with gimmicks. I believe that the Church of the Living God will give simply for the sake of the gospel. If people see the gospel being preached and recognize value in a ministry, they will sow into that ministry, and that is how ministries are funded.
I receive comments all the time on my channel, often ignorant comments, asking why I take up offerings and why I don’t just do what I do without them. The truth is that it would be impossible to execute television broadcasts without any financial backing. While the gospel is free, the means to deliver it can be very costly. Jesus said in Matthew 6:20–21, «Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves cannot break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.» So, finances serve as a gauge of your heart.
Now, this is why people often dislike discussions about money. I have already given the disclaimer that I will not be manipulative or tell you to send $77 in the next 77 minutes—nothing like that; that’s not biblical. I agree that God may speak to some individuals about what they should give, but for the most part, I don’t believe that God always communicates like that. Many who practice those sorts of things—again, not all—are sincere, and some may occasionally hear from God, but for the most part, it is just manipulation used to get people to give.
On the other hand, there are also those who are vehemently against financial sowing, using doctrinal issues as a façade to avoid commitment with their finances. Here’s the truth: If you follow Jesus, everything that you are needs to be committed to who He is, even your money. We talk about the gospel, and if we don’t invest in it, who do you think will? Do you think Hollywood will invest in the gospel? Do you think the Democrats or the Republicans will invest in it? No, we, the Church of the Living God, are the source of the gospel, and God uses what we have to fund what He does.
So, whenever I take an offering, I make it very clear. I don’t tell people that if they give, something specific will happen unless God truly speaks to me. What I say is, «If you give, we will use your support to help fund the spreading of the Gospel.» It’s straightforward, transparent, and I believe in doing it that way. Again, let me be very clear; I believe God wants to prosper you financially. I believe in supernatural sowing and reaping. I believe that when you fund the gospel, God does something supernatural for you. I believe all of this and know God will bless you for sowing financially. However, I also recognize that this has been horribly abused, so we must separate what the Bible says from how men misinterpret it.
You can often discern when people are manipulating the truth, but those principles are biblical and true. I won’t be able to read the entirety of the context, but in Matthew 25, we see the parable of the talents, and this demonstrates the first key to financial breakthrough: stewardship. Here’s the problem: Some people are so superstitious that they think they can drop $5 in an offering basket, continue to spend their money with poor spending habits, and suddenly see prosperity. God’s church is not a wishing well.
The reality is that the reason God blesses is not simply because you dropped $5 in the offering basket and magically made changes to your finances. Rather, those who consistently manage well what they have will be blessed with more. In fact, it is also very practical.
