David Diga Hernandez - How Do I Become a Friend of the Holy Spirit? (4 SIMPLE Keys)

So, firstly, I want to establish that friendship with the Holy Spirit is indeed a biblical concept. In 2 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 14, the scripture says, «May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.» I find it interesting that the Bible does not mention the fellowship with the Son or the fellowship of the Father; instead, it tells us, «May the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.» This is not to say that we are not to walk in relationship with the Father and the Son, but what it is conveying is that the Holy Spirit is also available to us as a friend, to fellowship with us day by day, moment by moment. Because friendship with the Holy Spirit is a biblical truth, I want to show you how to cultivate that friendship. I will give you four biblical keys to being a better friend to the Holy Spirit, and as you become a better friend to Him, He begins to trust you with more.

So, let’s take a look at the first key. Number one: the first biblical key to befriending the Holy Spirit, or being a better friend of the Holy Spirit, is understanding. 1 Corinthians chapter 2, verse 14 says, «But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them, and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.» In other words, the Holy Spirit is often misunderstood; people don’t understand the Holy Spirit unless they are spiritual. How often do we neglect the Holy Spirit and treat Him as if He is going to cause problems instead of breaking out in miracles? Too often, we reject Him; too often, we neglect Him. Too often, we treat Him as some strange thing that we don’t need. The truth is, He is not strange; neither is He a thing—He is a person, and He is the founder of the Church. Yet in many portions of the Church, He is being rejected; they are not allowing Him in the services. Why? Simply because they don’t understand Him. Many believers don’t want to interact with Him or learn more about Him because they have maybe seen things that misrepresent the person of the Holy Spirit.

But if you want to be a friend of the Holy Spirit, you need to come to the place of understanding His nature. Sometimes He asks you to do things that require faith to act upon; sometimes He asks you to do things that you will not understand. If we are going to truly remain in fellowship with Him and walk in sync with Him, we must be people who understand Him. Look, many places that the Holy Spirit goes, He is rejected; many places that He goes, He is misunderstood. But I want to be one that makes the Holy Spirit feel at home, makes Him feel welcomed. I want Him to know that I understand Him, that I’m not going to be embarrassed by Him, that I’m not going to be ashamed of His work.

You know, people watch our video content all the time and usually point out one thing that bothers them: they say, «I don’t understand why the people fall over when you pray for them.» Well, just because I don’t understand something doesn’t mean I should criticize it. I’m not even saying that the slain-in-the-Spirit phenomenon is the entirety of the Holy Spirit’s work, but it’s things like that that cause people to hesitate when receiving Him. That doesn’t mean we should stop allowing the Holy Spirit to move; it simply means we must come to the place where we decide to be understanding of His movement, to be understanding of His nature. While others might be put off by Him and may become uncomfortable with the way He moves, I’m going to allow Him to do whatever it is He wants to do, even if it makes others uncomfortable, even if it means that people will mock me. I want to stand with Him; if they misunderstand Him, then they will misunderstand me. If they mock Him, they’ll mock me, but I want to be one who remains faithful to Him as He has remained faithful to me. I want to be a friend of the Holy Spirit; therefore, I will treat Him with understanding, and I will approach Him with honor.

Number two is reverence. So, number one is understanding, and number two is reverence. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 30 says, «And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, He has identified you as His own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.» Listen to His voice, hear Him, and don’t grieve Him. In reverencing the Holy Spirit, I’m obeying Him, and remember that obedience to the Holy Spirit is not just about how clearly you hear Him; it’s also about how quickly you respond when He speaks. I do not want to delay, for delay is disobedience. I want to be responsive to the voice of the Holy Spirit; I want Him to know that He can trust me. I want Him to know that when He speaks, I will reverence Him; when He gives the word, I will obey Him. I reverence Him, I honor Him, I love Him, and I do not want to grieve Him. Because I don’t want to grieve Him, I am respectful of His feelings; I am respectful…
