The gift of tongues cannot be taught; only the Holy Spirit can give you a spiritual gift. When I talk about activating the gift of tongues, receiving the gift of tongues, or how to pray in tongues, I’m not saying that it’s solely up to you to decide to receive that gift. However, there is a partnership that we have with the Holy Spirit for anything spiritual that we do. The Holy Spirit helps you live righteously, but you still have to make the right decisions. The Holy Spirit helps you be a bold witness, but you still have to open your mouth and bear witness. Maybe the Holy Spirit has imparted a gift of healing, but you still have to lay hands on the sick. So, there is a partnership in the Spirit between you and God. When I talk about how to receive or activate the gift of speaking in tongues, I’m referring to this partnership. When my daughter was born, she came into the world seeing and hearing; I didn’t have to teach her to see or hear, but as time goes on, I will have to teach her to observe and listen. That is the dynamic—a partnership utilizing what the Holy Spirit has given you. Recently, I exposed eight lies that people believe about speaking in tongues. One of those lies is that not all believers can pray in tongues, but we went through the Scriptures and completely debunked that idea. I encourage you to look back at that lesson. So, once you’ve passed all of that rhetoric, once you’re past all those talking points and you see that those who claim not all believers can pray in tongues are really just twisting themselves into a theological pretzel to push their view through, once you’re past all that and you’ve examined the Scriptures, allowing the Word of God to have the final say, you’re left with the choice of whether or not you will embrace this spiritual gift that God is offering to you. Indeed, the Holy Spirit is offering this gift to you. Let’s look past the religious ideology and mindset that perhaps the Holy Spirit hasn’t chosen you to pray in tongues. Again, we covered this, and I encourage you to revisit that lesson. This message is for that individual who is now at the point where you’ve seen through all the deception, overcome those hurdles, those lies, and deceptive talking points, and you’re ready to say, «I want to pray in tongues.» This is who this message is for. In 1 Corinthians chapter 14, I want to first show you what the gift of tongues is, or at least one expression of the gift. In 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verse 2, the Bible says this: «For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you.» This expression of the gift of tongues is definitely not an earthly language; you will be speaking by the power of the Holy Spirit, and it will all be mysterious. In verse 4, the Bible says, «A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.» Here, Paul the Apostle is not condemning the gift of speaking in tongues; he’s comparing the gift of tongues to the gift of prophecy, stating that prophecy is greater—not that tongues is bad. In fact, in verse 4, we see clearly that the one who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally. So, how does that work? I want to show you another Scripture, Romans chapter 8, verse 26. To be clear, Romans 8:26 is not a specific reference to the gift of speaking in tongues. Rather, Romans chapter 8, verse 26 reveals the reality of the Holy Spirit’s prayer life for you. Romans chapter 8, verse 26 says, «And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.» Let’s read verses 27 and 28: «And the Father, who knows all hearts, knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.» We see that the Holy Spirit prays for us. Now, watch this: going back to 1 Corinthians, chapter 14, let’s read verse 14: «For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.» So the Holy Spirit prays when I pray in tongues, my spirit prays. If you go to 1 Corinthians chapter 6, verse 17, you’ll find a powerful Scripture: «But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.» It’s very simple: the Holy Spirit prays for me, my spirit prays when I pray in tongues. If my spirit is joined with the Holy Spirit, then when I pray in tongues, I’m praying in harmony with how the Holy Spirit prays because my spirit is joined with Him. Therefore, speaking in tongues allows the Holy Spirit to pray for you through you. Speaking in tongues enables the prayers of the Holy Spirit to become your prayers, and this is what makes the gift of speaking in tongues so powerful. Now, how do you activate this?
