David Diga Hernandez - The Person of the Holy Spirit

So when I say that the Holy Spirit is a person, let me be clear: I am NOT saying that the Holy Spirit is a human being or that He is not divine in nature. When I say that the Holy Spirit is a person, I mean that He is a personal being who can interact with us, and we’re going to explore that right now in the Scripture. The Holy Spirit is not just an influence, a force, or an energy; He is so much more than that. Pastor Benny Hinn said this: «If you think the Holy Spirit is an it, you’ll want to use it. If you know the Holy Spirit is a person, you’ll say, 'Holy Spirit, use me.'» My life was transformed when I discovered that the Holy Spirit is a person—someone who could befriend me, someone I could know, someone who could walk with me day to day. In fact, in Scripture, He is referred to as «who» or «He,» not «what» or «it.» Look at John chapter 15, verse 26, where the Bible says, «But I will send you the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about Me.» John chapter 16, verses 13 through 14 say, «But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.» In 1 John chapter 5, verses 6 to 8, the Bible says, «And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by His baptism in water and by shedding His blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood; and the Spirit, who is Truth, confirms it with His testimony. So we have these three witnesses: the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and all three agree.» We know that the Holy Spirit is a person because the Holy Spirit speaks. Acts chapter 8, verse 29 says, «The Holy Spirit said to Philip, 'Go over and walk along beside the carriage.'» The Holy Spirit has a will. 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 11 says, «But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will.» The Holy Spirit has feelings. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 30 says, «And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.» When I grieve the Holy Spirit, I can sense His heart breaking. I often tell people—and I don’t say this to try to sound super spiritual; I’m not trying to brag. In fact, I believe this should be the reality for every believer. You know, I’m not really afraid of demonic beings. If you’re living right, demonic beings can’t do anything to you. You’ve heard the phrase, «New levels, new devils.» Well, there’s no devil who can walk on your level when you’re walking in the glory of God. I’ve seen people possessed by demons; I’ve seen demonic beings physically. I have heard demonic voices coming out of people, and while at one time I was terrified of demonic beings, I am no longer afraid of them. I recognize that I have authority over them in Christ, so I’m not afraid of demonic beings, nor am I afraid of people. I remember one time I was attending this conference, and I was so excited to hear this one speaker. I got my notepad, I got my pen, and I got my Bible. I arrived at the service early and made my way all the way down to the front row. I sat there eager to learn, and a pastor came up to me and said, «Look at you! You think just because you’re popular now that you have to sit in the front row?» In my heart, I thought, «Well, maybe there is something in me that I didn’t see that wants to sit in the front row based on ego.» So, the next night I came back; there was another speaker I was just as excited to hear. I arrived at the service early, but instead of sitting in the very front, I decided to take a seat all the way in the back to hear the speaker. Sure enough, a different pastor came up to me—Kenton, this pastor said to me, «Look, just because you’re on TV now doesn’t mean you have to go hide here in the back. You think you’re a big shot and popular.» But I realized that whether I sat in the front row or the back row, it doesn’t matter. I can’t please people, nor should I try. I live to please God. This doesn’t mean I don’t consider others; this doesn’t mean I hate others. It just means I take the mature view of caring about what God thinks. This just means that I fear God, not men. So, no, I’m not afraid of demonic beings, and I’m not afraid of people. I can’t be intimidated by people. What I am afraid of is grieving the Holy Spirit. I don’t want to hurt Him; I never want to feel that sense when I can sense His heart breaking. So we know the Holy Spirit is a person because He has feelings; He can fellowship. In 2 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 14, the Bible says, «May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.» Philippians chapter 2, verses 1 through 2 say, «Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from His love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and…?»
