Though the Holy Spirit speaks to us in dreams, it is very important that you understand that the primary way God speaks is through His Word. If you are serious about hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit, then you must be serious about your devotion to His Word. The Holy Spirit uses the Word to build our foundation, giving us a greater understanding of who God is. Therefore, you must learn to base your life on the Word of God. The authority of divine dreams only goes so far; dreams, though they may be from God, are limited in their authority. Deuteronomy chapter 13 says this: Suppose there are prophets among you or those who dream dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles, and the predicted signs or miracles occur. If they then say, «Come, let us worship other gods—gods you have not known before,» do not listen to them. The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love Him with all your heart and soul. Serve only the Lord your God and fear Him alone. Obey His commands, listen to His voice, and cling to Him. Here, we see in Deuteronomy chapter 13 that though someone has a dream that is seemingly divine, even if that dream predicts the future, that doesn’t automatically give that individual greater authority than the Word of God. Ultimately, we must return to what the Bible says: obey His commands. His commands—that is His Word, His sure Word. The Bible is the more sure word of prophecy. Though God can speak through dreams, and though the Holy Spirit does reveal things through dreams, I must again emphasize that ultimately our foundation is the Word of God. The Word of God also acts as a safety net, keeping you from going off into some weird theology or pursuing some tangent that you shouldn’t even be wasting your time on. So, stay grounded in the Word. While you can look for some significance in your dreams, it is important that we always return to the Word. The Word is the foundation, the safety net, and the measure against which we compare the messages of these dreams. Not every dream has spiritual significance; sometimes, it is just your mind processing its own issues from throughout the day. Dreams can either be holy or unholy, depending on the decisions you make during your waking life. What you feed your mind throughout the day will manifest in your dreams. Therefore, when I live a holy life, devote myself to the Word, and commit to prayer, I become more susceptible to receiving divine revelation through dreams. When I live holy, think holy, and speak holy, I unblock my dream state and allow for the Holy Spirit to move even in my dreams. There were times when I would fall asleep praying, and in my dreams, I would be praying in tongues. I would then wake up praying in tongues and weeping in the presence of God. We also hear of believers who struggle with ungodly dreams and wonder how they keep having these dreams. Well, you have to ask yourself what you are putting into your mind throughout the day that causes you to have those dreams at night. Your mind is processing your day while you dream, and if you are inputting godly things, the Word, devotion to prayer, and a lifestyle of holiness, then what will manifest in your dream state will be holy. Many verses in the Bible support several of the points I am about to make, but for the sake of brevity and simplicity, I will not give an exhaustive list of all the scriptures on dreams. This lesson will focus on some of the primary points regarding how the Holy Spirit speaks to us in our dream state.

Number one: God can actually impart wisdom to you through your dreams. Think about the fact that Solomon received wisdom through a divine interaction that took place in his dream. Though he was dreaming, he did indeed interact with God. This is what the Bible says in 1 Kings chapter 3: That night, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, «What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you.» Solomon replied, «You showed great and faithful love to your servant my father David because he was honest, true, and faithful to you. You have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne. Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. Here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous that they cannot be counted. Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?» Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life, wealth, or the death of your enemies, I will give you what you asked for: a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has ever had or ever will have. I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame. No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life.
