The Bible uses words in the book of Hebrews, such as «immutable,» which means unchanging. The writer seems to suggest very clearly that Jesus, who is the express image of God, is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore, implying that we can find comfort in the fact that God is consistent. He was a waymaker, He is a waymaker, and He will be a waymaker. He was a door opener, He is a door opener, and He will be a door opener. He was a healer, He is a healer, and He will be a healer. He is consistently consistent, reliably reliable. He’s dependable, can be leaned on, and can be depended on. Some of us ought to admit that when we audit our lives, the only reason we are still «sane in the membrane» is not because we have been consistent, but because God has been consistent. He is unchanging. Words like «immutable» are used to describe Him. Words like «omniscient» are used to describe Him, which means He is all-knowing and all-seeing. I’ve heard it put this way: we can see to the corner, but God can see around it; we can see to the hill, but God can see over it; we can see today, but God can see tomorrow. This is something I’ve termed the principle of perspective: where you sit determines what you see, and what you see determines what you do. Sometimes God is doing things we don’t understand; when we don’t realize He is not acting based on what you see, He is acting based on what He sees. If He is not doing what you think He ought to be doing, it’s because He is seeing something you don’t know He is seeing. Did you hear what I just said? He is making decisions in your today based on what He sees about your tomorrow. So you just have to trust His eyes when you can’t trust your own, because He is all-seeing. Maybe the promotion didn’t happen not because you weren’t good enough; maybe the promotion didn’t happen because God saw six months down the line that the whole department was going to be phased out. What you thought was rejection was protection. I want to know, is there anybody on this side of the church that’s going to talk back to me today? I said, what you thought was rejection was protection, because God sees something we don’t see. Did you hear what I said? He is all-seeing. Words like «omnipotent» are used, which has been described as God having all power. I think practically it’s probably better defined as God having ultimate power, speaking to His sovereignty. It means that other people may have power, but He has more. When Jesus was preparing and mentoring His disciples and helping them get educated on how to perform exorcisms, the first thing He told them was, «I have given you power over all the power of the enemy.» He didn’t say the enemy didn’t have power; He just said, «I gave you more.» I don’t know what you are going through and what you are facing; I just want to remind you that more is in you. Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. He’s omnipotent. But there’s a word that I want to use that I think is equally important yet not as eloquent, and that is: God is not only immutable, omniscient, and omnipotent; God is intentional. What do I mean by that? I mean that He does not act in a way that is random, haphazard, flippant, reactive, or impulsive. He is deliberate, calculated, and strategic. He knows exactly what He’s doing and when He wants to do it. He knew when Jesus would be born, He knew where He would be born, and to prove it, He put it in the heart of a prophet named Micah, who prophesied where He would be born—that He would be born to a virgin—to let us know this is no accident. I have something on my calendar, and when I get ready for it to come to pass, no Herod can stop it. When I am ready to birth something in your life, I don’t care who tries to kill what is getting ready to be birthed. I don’t care what spirit of Herod tries to annihilate what God wants to produce through you. When God has it on His timetable, it has to come to pass. God is intentional. So I am saying His actions are never an end unto themselves; they are always a means to an end. In other words, He is never doing a thing just to do that thing; He is intentional. So when He does something, He does so intentionally, and when He does nothing, He does that intentionally. So when He does something, praise Him for that, and when He does nothing, praise Him for that. I know you get encouraged to praise God because He did something; I want to find the side of the church that will praise God because He’s doing nothing. Because if He’s doing nothing, He’s doing something, praise Him for that. He is intentional. So if He is intentional, it means that the believer must move past merely observing and appreciating what God has done, but it means the believer should take another step and ask why God has done it. Does that make sense? It means that a believer should do more than just appreciate the roles God put them in, like Esther; a believer should be willing to ask, «Why did You put me here? What stronghold needs to come down? What door needs to open for somebody else? What word needs to be spoken to somebody?» Moving from just appreciating what God has done to understanding why He has done it, and that approach should not just impact the way we live our.
