Dharius Daniels - RESET - Part 6

All right, so we’re in a series called «Reset,» and we’re using the book of Romans to reset our lives. Now, everybody listen to me: you’re in one of three spaces. Okay? You’re coming out of a reset, you’re in the middle of a reset, or you’re getting ready to go into a reset, and you don’t know it yet. Everyone listening to me is in one of those spaces—either coming out of a reset, in the middle of a reset, or heading toward a reset that you don’t yet realize is coming. So, we’re going to use God’s Word to help us reset and reverse the trajectory of our lives. I want you to type this in the chat; it might be a little challenging since I’m not the best speller, and some of you might be better than me, but I want you to type «divine reversal» if you’re believing God for this in some area of your life. Put that in the chat: «divine reversal.» That’s what a reset is—when God turns things around, when the trajectory of something shifts. Some of us need it in our relationships, so we’re just speaking what we believe—those are divine reversals. Some of us need it in our emotional lives; we’re believing for divine reversals. Some of us need it in our professional lives—things are not going the way we’d like or need them to. We’re praying for divine reversals and resets. That’s a divine reversal.

There’s a part God plays, and there’s a part we play. We want to ensure we are doing our part while using God’s Word to help us do that. So tonight, I want to talk to you about resetting your weaknesses. Come on! We’re going to study Romans chapters 5, 6, and 7, which will aid us in resetting our weaknesses. Now, I think there are a couple of things we need to unpack and establish. Okay? Having weaknesses, or having them because we all do, doesn’t mean—look at me—it doesn’t mean you’re weak. Having a weakness means you’re human. I’ll say that one more time: having weaknesses doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means you’re human.

Now, when I say «weakness,» I’m not talking about habits—those are choices we make. I’m not talking about addictions, and I’m not talking about what the Bible would call strongholds. When I say «weaknesses,» I’m referring to something that I think I need to unpack. All right? Your weaknesses can fall into two categories: immoral and unhelpful. Immoral—that’s one type. Unhelpful—what does the Bible call this? Sin—that’s immoral. Wait, that’s unhelpful, right? That’s in the book of Hebrews. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the writer of Hebrews says, «Let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us.» A weight—that’s not immoral; it’s not unethical; it’s just unhelpful, like procrastination. That’s not always a sin, so it’s not always immoral, but it can be unhelpful. Am I making sense here?

So, procrastination and passive-aggressiveness—those aren’t always immoral, but they can be unhelpful. Because nobody is responsible for advocating for you like you are! The Bible even says to love your neighbor as you love yourself. If you haven’t been taught how to love you—then there’s no way you can effectively love someone else. Now, you can love other people, but you can’t love them rightly if you haven’t learned how to love yourself well. I don’t know why I’m on this, but I feel I need to park here for a minute. If I need to park here, I need somebody to just type «park» in the chat. Yep, we’re coming out the gate swinging tonight! Yeah, put «park!»

See, here’s the thing: there are times when—watch this—you’re loving people strongly, but you’re not loving them wisely. If we aren’t loving ourselves well, Jesus said to love your neighbor as you love yourself. He’s assuming you’ve developed the skill of self-love. That’s not selfishness; it’s self-love. It’s embracing and accepting your unique design. You, sir, you, ma’am, have a unique design. You have a fingerprint that is unlike any other fingerprint in existence on this earth. You’ve come here—come here—you’ve got unique passions. There are things that your heart beats for—come on—that are unique and distinct.

Your passion is not your purpose; don’t get that confused. Because if your passion were your purpose, I would be a professional basketball player or a professional video gamer since I’m passionate about both of those things. So, your passion—come here—isn’t your purpose, but your passion is one of the compasses to your purpose. What’s a compass? A compass isn’t a GPS, but it tells you which way you’re going—north-ish, south-ish, east-ish, west-ish. So, your passion helps point you in the right direction. We have unique passions—come on—we have unique perspectives. We see things differently. We’ve got unique potential, too: one talent, two talents, five talents; that’s the parable that Jesus tells in Matthew 25.

So we’ve been made—David said, «I’m fearfully and wonderfully made.» What’s that? That’s self-love! That’s not selfishness; that’s not idolatry; that’s not a love of self in the sense that someone loves themselves more than they love God. No, it is the recognition that comes from a revelation.
