The term «Quantum Leap» is one we use in the coaching and personal development space, but it is borrowed from the world of quantum physics. It is used to describe how a particle of matter explosively leaps from one space to the next. When applied to our personal lives, Quantum leaps reject the notion that all progress and growth must be incremental. Earlier, I mentioned a season when I was 19 years old and dealt with a bout of depression. In 2014, I experienced burnout, and during that season, I noticed a deficit in my development. I encountered burnout even while following all the principles and practices I learned in church. I was living righteously, but I wasn’t living well. I was living morally, but not meaningfully. I realized if I were to live life as God intended, please hear what I’m about to say: God was enough, but Sunday was not. Therefore, I needed to expand my understanding of spiritual development beyond the typical teachings I received in church, incorporating personal development and emotional intelligence into my spiritual maturation. As I began to see things this way, I started to view the Bible in a light I hadn’t seen before. I would look at Paul in Galatians chapter 5 and observe that a lot of the fruit of the Spirit is actually emotional: joy, peace. It’s as if the work of the Spirit was impacting and influencing the course and quality of my emotional life. I began to explore faith-based, biblically grounded personal development, and I was introduced to terms I had not encountered before, including Quantum leaps. This term is utilized in the coaching and personal development space, borrowed again from quantum physics to describe how a particle of matter explosively leaps from one space to another. When applied to our lives, Quantum leaps reject the idea that all progress must be incremental, pushing back against the notion that everything has to happen step by step. It suggests that some things can happen in leaps. I know technically this is not a leap year, but prophetically, it can be a leap year because God is not only the God who orders our steps; in some instances, He orchestrates leaps. What do I mean? When you leap, you go further, faster, and I believe we all can experience more than just incremental growth. In some areas, we can experience exponential growth. God can do big things, and God can do it quickly. This is what we call a Quantum Leap: the idea that just because it took a long time for others does not mean it has to take that long for you. I will say that one more time: just because it took that long for others does not mean it has to take that long for you. I would argue that if you engage in any objective exegesis of the miracles of Jesus in the New Testament, you will see many of them were actually Quantum leaps. For example, in Mark 5, there is a woman dealing with an issue of blood for 12 years. She explores every remedy available to her, spends all she has, consults every doctor she knows, tries every naturopathic treatment, and yet does not get better. Then she encounters Jesus, and with one touch, what she dealt with for 12 years was resolved in 12 seconds. That’s a Quantum Leap. In John 5, there is a man at the pool of Bethesda suffering from an unnamed illness for 38 years. He is at the pool, which is the synthesis of two Hebrew words—Beth and Ezra. Beth means «house,» and the Bible states this pool was by the Sheep Gate. This pool had five porticoes, a metaphor for a five-fold ministry. The pool symbolizes the Holy Spirit, while the Sheep Gate symbolizes Jesus because Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the way the sheep get to the Father, making this a metaphor for the house of God. The Bible reveals that he is there for 38 years, but nothing changes. In one moment, he encounters Jesus, and what could not be fixed in 38 years is resolved in one moment. It’s a Quantum Leap. In the Gospel of Luke, the Bible reveals that there was a woman in the synagogue who had struggled with a condition that prevented her from standing erect for 18 years. Jesus, teaching in the synagogue, observes this woman bent over and says to her, «Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.» This woman, who could not straighten herself for 18 years, stands up immediately. I don’t know who needs something straightened out. I don’t know how long you’ve been trying to manage it on your own in your own strength. I don’t know how long you’ve been praying and fasting about it. I want you to know that God can transform your situation.
