A few weeks ago, I started a series called The Family Series. This is part three and the final installment of this series , "The Family Series." We 've been looking at Genesis chapters 2, 3, and 4, addressing the challenge of the calculated and concerted effort to destroy the family . The enemy is seeking to tear apart the family unit as we understand it. In part one , we delivered a message to singles. Where are all the single people ? All the single people! Okay, we explored the fact that the first family unit was a single man named Adam and discussed that topic. In part two, we addressed spouses . Somebody say "spouses." How many of you know that if your spouse just gets themselves together, your marriage will be just fine? We looked at the challenges we face with spouses and the enemy's attempts to separate and damage relationships. Thirdly, today I want to look at the final part of this series and discuss the seed . Somebody say, "the seed." One more time , say "the seed." Okay, all of you who didn't say "seed," can you say it this time? Say "seed." God is interested in the seed . I think it's important for you and me to understand that when God does something for us, it is not really for us . When He blesses you with a job, a home , or resources , it is not so much for you as it is for your seed . God is a generational God; He thinks generationally and long-term. His interest is not just about the here and now ; He is concerned about generations to come. He cares about your children , your grandchildren , and your great-grandchildren. So, He sets up provisions, resources , and opportunities not just for you but for your kids . Therefore, He is interested in the seed, and the enemy is making an effort to mess up and destroy that seed. The devil wants your children; he wants to kill your seed and disrupt your grandchildren's lives. Our desire today is to address this matter and help us understand the importance and value of the seed .
With that in mind , I want to look at chapter four at the seeds of Adam and Eve, which are Cain and Abel. Here, we glean some insight from this chapter and section of Scripture that I want to discuss for a few moments . I want to begin with my first point: our seed has a dynamic purpose . Your seed has an assignment ; they have a purpose . They are not just a result of mom and dad getting together; they are not simply the product of an encounter between a man and a woman. When you have a child , there is an assignment behind that child 's life. We see two particular purposes that I want to outline quickly . The first one appears in verse 25 : "And Adam knew his wife again , and she bore a son and named him Seth, for God had appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed." In verse 26: "And as for Seth, to him also a son was born, and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord." God gives an assignment: our seed has the assignment of calling on the name of the Lord. He wants our children to reach a stage in life where they are calling on His name.
What does that mean ? It means that wherever you are in God today, whatever stage of life you are at, God wants your children to go much further than where you are now . I find it interesting that the Bible states in verse 26 that men began to call on the name of the Lord. What about Adam and Eve? What about Cain and Abel? All of them had relationships with God, but it wasn't until verse 26 that God said men began to call on His name. What is the essence of this? It indicates that it was at that moment that men transitioned to a place where they could now ascribe character to God. Whenever you speak the name of the Lord , it is always a reflection of His character. Whenever you use God's name , it is ascribed to describe something about His nature. The essence here is that it is at that point that man begins to assign character to God and can sense and see the make-up of His nature. You see , for some of us, our relationship with God is so limited and narrow that we think of Him as an invisible bellhop to whom we simply voice our problems , and He comes to solve them. But there is so much more .
