Earlier this week, my wife asked me on multiple occasions what I wanted for Father's Day. In fact, she asked me a couple of times, then asked me what I wanted for dinner. She posed this question multiple times , and I really didn't know what to tell her. I knew that I could express what I didn't want - another tie, no socks , no undershirts , and no more underwear. That phase had played its course . I thought I would talk to you all about the gifts that one can give to their father for Father's Day. However, I came to the conclusion that , for me, what I want for Father's Day cannot be bought with money. As a matter of fact, as I considered this, I noticed in the Book of Proverbs there are several places that discuss what a child - or children-can give to their fathers for Father's Day . Therefore, I thought I would talk to you all about what to give and what not to give to your father . So, this is a Bible study today; it's not the traditional one-passage scripture lesson. I brought Bible study to you since you won't come to Bible study. Look at your neighbor and say, "He brought it to you since you won't come!" Tell that person next to you to go ahead and speak up. We're going to look at a lot of verses from the Book of Proverbs that discuss what not to give and what can be given to a father for Father's Day . I thought I'd start off by giving you eight points altogether. Let me give you the first five things not to give to a father on Father's Day .
Here 's the first one: don't give him foolishness. Somebody say, "Don 't give him foolishness!" The Hebrew word for foolishness mentioned several times throughout Proverbs means stupid or silly . Now, I wonder if there's anyone here today who has ever done something stupid? Let 's see a show of hands-one, two, three... yeah, I'm sure there are more than this few who have done something foolish and thought, "What was I thinking when I did that ?" Proverbs warns us not to give our father foolishness. In Proverbs chapter 17, we find two verses very close together that talk about this concept -the idea of a foolish child . Chapter 17 , verse 21 says, "He who begets a scoffer does so to his sorrow, and the father of a fool has no joy." The first point is that a fool steals joy from his father. When a father has a child who does foolish things, it drains his joy. So, I don't want my children to give me foolishness.
In chapter 17 , verse 25 , it further expounds, "A foolish son is a grief to his father ." When you do foolish things, you bring grief to your dad . You take away his joy and give him grief-don't give that to your father. One more verse in chapter 19 , verse 13-am I going too fast for you all? Good. Chapter 19:13 says, "A foolish son is the ruin of his father." It also says, "And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping ." I won't talk about that one right now; that's another message . Today we just want to focus on how children ought to treat their fathers . Don 't do stupid or silly things. You take your father's joy, cause him grief , and represent ruin to him . How tragic it would be for a man to spend all of his energy and time investing in you, only for you to make foolish choices that ruin his work, his life, or even his name and reputation. The scripture gives this warning: don't give him foolishness .
Secondly, don't mistreat or rob him. There are several verses that deal with that. While we're in chapter 19 , it says in verse 26, "He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother is a son who causes shame and brings reproach ." "Mistreat" and "rob" are terms we'll see in Proverbs 28 . Both words convey a similar meaning-ravaging, robbing, or taking away . Yet, there are people who mistreat their fathers . The scripture says when you mistreat your father , when you rob him, you bring shame and reproach upon him . The last thing your father wants is to be ashamed and to feel reproached . Now turn to Proverbs 28:24 for a moment. It adds this point about robbing your father. Verse 24 says, "Whoever robs his father or his mother and says it is no transgression, the same is a companion to a destroyer." Here you are, stealing from your father and claiming you 've done nothing wrong by taking his resources , time , or whatever it may be .
