In life, we are bound to face storms. Storms are just a part of life. However, we must realize that there are some storms that are triggered simply because of our obedience to God’s word. These are the storms that don’t come to eliminate us but to elevate us to the next level of our life. Normally, Jesus would rebuke the storm for the disciples, but in Matthew 14 Jesus did not rebuke the storm. Rather, He ignored it and commanded Peter to walk on water with Him. Sometimes, God keeps you from the storm. Other times, He keeps you in the midst of the storm to let you know that you have power to walk over it. You have the power to not just chase the storm, but to calm the storm.
On your way to your seat, look at your neighbor and tell them, «The Storm Chasers.» You may be seated. The Storm Chasers. Some of you are like, «Damn, the Storm Chasers!» So, Jesus performed over 40 recorded miracles, signs, and wonders in the Bible. This is if you include His Transfiguration, His death, His resurrection, and His Ascension. Most theologians will tell you it’s about 37 miracles, but I still consider His resurrection, His death, His burial, and even His birth a miracle. It’s no secret that miracles were a trademark of Jesus’s ministry. I mean, that’s what we read about every day—Jesus is a miracle worker. In fact, the Bible says in John chapter 21, I believe verse 25, that Jesus did so much that if it were to be written in a book, the whole world would not be able to contain it. Now, this is not literal; this is not figurative. What Jesus did in three and a half years—the Bible literally says that if the whole world were a library and we had to write it down, there would not be room enough to document everything Jesus did. So, Jesus was big on miracles. I wish I had all the time to brag on Jesus, and hold on a second, I’m in church, so we might as well brag in church! This is Sunday morning, right? We can talk about the miracles of Jesus for a second. When you look at the life of Jesus, He was literally laden with miracles. Jesus shows up and turns water into wine. Jesus shows up, and even when He was not conscious of it, the woman with the issue of blood touched the hem of His garment and was healed. Jesus healed the lepers; He was preaching, and all of a sudden, someone drops in from the roof, and healing began to take place everywhere. Jesus raised Jairus’s daughter and healed the centurion’s servant. I could go on and on. Jesus was, and is, a miracle worker. Let me just pause here for a second to let you know that we didn’t come to entertain you. When I was praying today, I told God I didn’t want to come here with enticing words of men’s wisdom. People have needs; people have questions. This is not America’s Got Talent. We’re not here to showcase anything; we’re here to encounter Jesus. We’re not here to show off; we’re here to experience an encounter with Jesus. Somebody say, «Amen!» This is why I told you to look at your neighbor and tell them that you came for an encounter. I tried to get you to help me, but you couldn’t help me, and now I’m here where Jesus is—the only one that can help me. Excuse me if I’m radical; excuse me if I’m extroverted about it; excuse me if I’m vocal about it because it’s only God that can help me. I tried to call my dad; I tried to call my mom; I tried to call my friends and my family, and I’m still going through the same thing. So, excuse me if I’m vocal, and excuse me if I’m animated in church today, because the only person who can help me is Jesus. Somebody shout «Jesus!» No, somebody shout it like there’s power in that name! Somebody say it like there’s power in that name: «Jesus!» I’m just trying to get you all warmed up and ready. Look at somebody and shout «Jesus!» One thing I’ve noticed, Harold, is that Jesus is not selective about who He performs His miracles for. If you’re sick, you get the healing; He just performs miracles. However, I noticed something, Chassity—that He was very selective about where He did the miracles. I didn’t know this until this weekend. I promise I thought Jesus was just going around doing miracle after miracle, but it dawned on me, Chassity, that while He was performing miracles, there was something else happening behind the scenes because He was not just performing miracles everywhere. Why do I say this? Because if you study this text, and we just read about Jesus walking on water, you have to back up 12 verses. Matthew chapter 12 lets us know that in this chapter, the first few verses tell us that Jesus literally just lost His cousin, John the Baptist; he was beheaded. So, here you see Jesus. When you read the text, you understand that He was also feeding the 5,000. It dawned on me; he had been performing miracles, but He didn’t perform this miracle for everybody. He performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000 for the multitudes, but when it came to walking on water, Jesus could not do that before everyone. Even when it came to the Transfiguration, Jesus did not perform that miracle for everybody; He didn’t even take all the disciples. He said, «All of you cannot handle it. Peter, James, John, let’s go.» And here’s the problem: because you think everyone can handle you at 100%, you keep revealing your purpose and your power to everyone, but you don’t understand that not everyone can handle you at 100%. Jesus understood that you need to have layers and levels in your relationships. I’m just saying that the reason you are accumulating so many enemies is that you don’t understand your call from your crowd from your critics, because what you’re called to and committed to your call can handle the crowd.
