Pastor Robert shares with us regarding the reason for the Christmas season—God coming down and living among us as Jesus. Jesus was and is fully God, and fully man—and the best Christmas gift ever given, reconciling us completely to God.
Christmas is a celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth. There is a concerted effort in today’s culture to take Christ out of Christmas. As followers of Christ, we can declare, “I believe in Christmas” based on two important truths.
1. I believe in the virgin birth (Matthew 1:18-23; Isaiah 7:10-14). Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, not by Joseph, his earthly father (Matthew 1:18, 20). The virgin birth boldly proclaims that Jesus was fully God on this earth. One of the names for Jesus is “Immanuel,” which means “God with us.” God did not send a messenger of salvation or someone else to redeem us; He came to be with us Himself. God didn’t dismiss our sins; He paid the penalty Himself when Jesus died on the cross.
2. I believe that Jesus came in the flesh (John 1:1, 14). There is a war raging against this truth (1 John 4:2-3; 2 John 7). Jesus was fully human on this earth. If Jesus did not become a man, then He didn’t die. If He didn’t die, then our sins are not atoned for.
As a man, Jesus suffered. As a man, He died. As God, Jesus overcame death, made atonement for our sins and destroyed the power of the devil (Hebrews 2:14).
