I want to give you a scripture in just a moment. Actually, I’m going to give you a few scriptures, so I want you to get your notebook ready or get your iPad ready, whatever it is you take notes on, because I want you to write some things down. I want to talk to you today, and I believe that the Word is going to help you as you begin to absorb His Word. The Bible talks about the engrafted Word of God, which is able to save your soul. It’s not the Word that goes over your head; it’s not the Word that goes under your feet, but it is the Word that latches hold of your life. It’s able to save your soul. This week, I believe it’s the 21st or 22nd week of the pandemic, and I heard someone say on the news that we are heading into our fifth or sixth month of this pandemic. People have been through so much during this season; they’ve been through so much during this time. We have not just been living through this physical pandemic, but in the middle of it, there have been some financial pandemics and emotional pandemics that people have found themselves trying to survive. From the very beginning, the very first week that I spoke to you from a remote place, my goal from that day was to make sure that I was there to help feed you and arm you so that you might be strengthened and stabilized. Just as you deal with all of the radical changes that this pandemic has brought to your life, I don’t have a cure for it in the natural, so I can’t protect you physically. But I do work diligently, and our team has worked diligently to give you hope and assurance that we can cope with the side effects of just having our lives turned upside down. Many of us have had our lives completely rocked and turned upside down, and here’s the thing: we don’t know how long it’s going to last, but we do know, as the Bible tells us, that God has promised us we are not a people without hope. One of the best places to find hope when you are facing a crisis—any kind of crisis in your life—can be found in the book of James. It’s not a very big book, but it is full of big answers if you are in a crisis. That is what I want to talk to you about today. He helps us and coaches us, and if you have an ear to hear, he can guide us through a moment of crisis. As a matter of fact, the book was written to people under an extreme amount of stress. The Roman Empire had gone through a period where they were severely persecuting people, and, as if that wasn’t bad enough, they could no longer meet together, which kind of sounds familiar today. They were decentralized; they were scattered all over the Roman Empire. The Apostle James, who was the half-brother of Jesus, wrote a letter to encourage those people because of the stress they were carrying. He wanted them to know it’s not only possible for you to survive this moment, but it is possible for you to thrive in the middle of it. Stress is going to come; it’s present for many people. Storms are going to happen, and when they do, storms can leave you unstable. If a storm hits you hard enough, it can leave you feeling shaken. So, in order to survive the stressful seasons, the unstable seasons, and the life-shaking seasons you might find yourself in, James knew then and we know today that we need an anchor. We need something that grips the solid rock. An anchor is often the difference between surviving and succumbing to the storm. Having an anchor is almost always the difference between someone who survives it and someone who succumbs to it. What is an anchor? There are different kinds of anchors. A rock climber has an anchor; they tie the cord around themselves, and then they anchor into the rock they are climbing, so they can move higher and make progress on their journey upward. An anchor is what they use to secure themselves to the mountain they find themselves climbing. I want to say to us today that I don’t know if it has ever been more important in my lifetime to have that anchor. I want to encourage those of you watching today to know that you’ve got to have an anchor, and you need to build that anchor around yourself. How then, Pastor, do we anchor ourselves to the rock? Well, Jesus answered that for us; it really came at the end.
