Moving forward with a double portion-that's what I want to talk аbout: a double portion. The word "double" means twice as large, twice as heavy, twice as strong, twofold in size, amount , number , and extent. That 's what double means, and that's what Elisha asked of Elijah. He said, "Before you leave," because the scripture tells us , if you get a chance to read it, starting at verse one , we hear the story of Elijah being taken away. He is going to be caught up; in fact, he will be one of two men on the planet who don't die. He ascends into heaven , and before he leaves, he says to his student, "What do you want, Elisha?" Elisha asked Elijah for a double portion of the spirit that is upon him. I wanted to discuss that tonight because I think you can only imagine what it would be like if you had a double portion of anything in your life, but trouble. Amen? What would your life be like if you had twice the money that you had? You all can't even imagine that; it got quiet. I couldn't even get any amens on that. If you had twice the love that you were looking for, if you had twice the confidence, twice the peace, twice the joy, twice the victories-whatever it is you wanted in life-if God gave you twice of it, that's what Elisha asked of Elijah . He said, "I'd like to have a double portion of the spirit that is upon you." He's asking for a good thing because Elijah's life is filled with miracles. Elijah lives his life with several supernatural miracles occurring in it . It was Elijah who prophesied and declared to Israel that there would be a drought in the land, and God honored his word. For three and a half years , there was no rain upon the planet. It was the supernatural miracle of God that, during the drought , Elijah was fed supernaturally by ravens who brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening. What is significant about that is that ravens are scavengers; they are creatures that take what has died and consume it . But God shifted the nature of the raven, and instead of being a scavenger, it took on the role of a delivery boy and brought food to Elijah. That 's a supernatural thing . Let me tell you what it means for you: it means that someone who would normally take from you, God is going to shift their attitude and nature , causing those who would take from you to bring to you . Somebody say amen! I could use a double portion of that. It was Elijah who had these miracles in his life-16 of them in total. It was Elijah who helped a widow- her husband had died-and when her husband died , she owed money , and the collector, the person to whom she owed the debt, came... I'm sorry , let me back up; I'm running ahead of myself. Here was the drought in the land , and he came across a woman to whom he said, "Give me something to eat; give me a sandwich." She said , "All I have is enough meal for me and my son; we're going to eat that and die ." But the prophet said to her, "Feed me first, and God will take care of you." So she fed him; she obeyed him, and every time she went back to her barrel, there was always something in it. Somebody say , "That 's a miracle!" It was Elijah who raised a widow's son back to life; he raised him from the dead. It was Elijah who challenged the false prophets of Baal and said, "Let 's decide whose God is the real God . You build an altar; I'll build an altar. You call on your God; I'll call on my God , and let the God that answers by fire be the true and living God ." And it was Elijah's God who answered by fire. He performed 16 miracles in his life. I could go on and talk about several other miracles that occurred in his life, but 16 is significant. Nevertheless, Elisha said to Elijah, "Can you give me a double portion of the anointing that is on you ?" As a matter of fact, Elijah said, "You 've asked a hard thing, but nevertheless, if you see me when I'm taken away, it shall be so for you; but if you don't see me, it won't happen ." Have I confused you all yet? Let me try a little bit harder. He asked for a double portion , and in fact, we are going to read shortly that Elisha received the double portion of Elijah's anointing. Over the course of his life, he performed 31 miracles. Yes, Elijah performed 16, but during Elisha's life , he performed 31. I know we have some mathematicians here; I know some of you have already calculated that that's not quite a double portion, Pastor. See, I felt the tension in the room ; I felt the discussion going on. But let me help you out . After Elisha had died and was buried in a cave , one particular day, a group of men were on the run from some people trying to rob them .
