I want you to rehearse these four words: «I’m working on it.» That 's what I want to talk about this morning. I am working on it. The next time your spouse comes and asks if there’s anything to eat, I just want you to look at them. If you haven’t done it yet, just say, «I’m working on it.» I’m working on it. If you’ve ever broken a promise to somebody and they can’t figure out why you’re not able to fulfill it, just tell them, «I didn’t mean to forget. I’m just working on it .»
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh upon me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh upon me. Eternal Spirit, it is once again that I come asking for your permission to preach, not to entertain, but to proclaim that you are Jesus the Christ. Order my steps in your word. Hide me behind your cross. Cover me in your blood, that they may see none of me, but oh Lord, all of you. I’m yours and you are mine. Use me as an instrument; help me to play the tune of your choice. And everybody who loves the Lord, say Amen. Everybody at home, just say, «I’m working on it.»
Hallelujah! I could almost bet within an inch of proximity that in your lifetime, every one of you has had someone come up to you and ask you this question. I could guarantee it. Nobody has ever asked you for a million dollars, perhaps, or maybe someone has never asked you to bail them out of jail. Perhaps no one has ever asked you for something of extreme value, I’m sure. But I bet you that you’ve been asked this question, and that question we are asked so often is simply a way of saying hello. Have you ever been asked this question? Somebody comes to you and asks, «Is everything okay?» or «How are you?» or «Are you doing all right?» I bet you all of us have been asked that question.
If I am accurate on the question, I can also be accurate about what I assume you say in that instance. I’m sure that a majority of you, whenever asked if you are okay, respond just like the rest of us. Even if things are not okay, you say «yes,» or if you’re cool like me, you might say, «Yeah, I’m good.» But I’m sure that all of you answer " yes» to that question even when the answer is actually «no.» Because I can guarantee, with some degree of accuracy, that no matter what you’re going through in your life — I don’t care how much money you have, what neighborhood you live in, or what city or state you’re in-everybody has a problem. And I don’t want you to be fooled. I don’t want you to look at social media and see somebody’s nice car and their nice family. I don’t want you to look on Instagram and see some couple that you envy because they’re always hugging and always together, or always out to eat. Even that couple you’re watching has some kind of problem.
There is nobody exempt from trouble. Job said, «In this world, you’ll have trouble.» And man, born of a woman, is of a few days, and he follows up by saying, «Those days are filled with trouble.» Everybody has something going on, and when we ask what’s wrong, we typically say «yes,» but that is not always an honest answer. Most of us are not good at being honest with our emotions. It has been suggested that, on average, we are asked how we are doing at least five to ten times a day. This means that if you’re asked how you’re doing five to ten times a day and you answer in the affirmative, as if everything is okay, then I can, with a degree of accuracy, accuse you of lying at least five to ten times a day. The truth is, you want to say, «All hell is breaking loose.»
If you really want to know, I’m broke, I don 't have any money, my kids' shoes are small, by the time I get them home from the store I don’t have the money to pay my bills, I’m struggling in my relationship, I have anxiety, I have depression. If you want to know, or are you just asking? Because the truth is, I hate where I work. I just go there so I can pay the bills, and my boss is an idiot and arrogant, but I have to go because he pays the bills. If the truth be told, you don’t give the honest answer because you don’t think people can handle the truth. And if they could handle the truth, what would they do with it? Then they would have no answer for your issue. So we just say «I’m fine.»
The truth is, most of us know or believe that most people could care less about what we are going through. And the truth is, I could probably guarantee that if you’re listening to me right now, something is wrong. Maybe not on the outside. Maybe all your clothes are tailor-made. Maybe all your furniture is brand new. Maybe your carpet has good padding underneath it. Maybe you have good dishes and your silverware is clean, and you’ve got all of this going on for you, but somewhere deep down, as Grandma would say, in the center of your soul, there is an undiscovered issue or an unexcavated problem.
