Alright, this is Adam’s Family part 4. We’re looking at the first family in the Bible, and we are Zion Music. They say they’re ready, so hit them with that groove! Hey, yeah! Give it up for the baddest band in America, Zion Music!
Alright, if you have a Bible, either a physical copy or a digital one, go to Genesis chapter 2. We’re going back to Genesis chapter 2; we have some more work to do. Genesis chapter 2, if you want to follow along in your Bible. If you are physically able, please stand at one of our in-person locations as we honor God before He even speaks to us through His Word. We stand in attention to His Word. Amen! Speak, Lord; your servants are listening. We want to hear from you.
I’m about to read one verse. I’m going back to verse 18, and I’m going to read it again. Now, before I read this verse, I want you to tell somebody, «It’s good to see you today.» Good to see you today, Jeff! Good to see you today!
On the clock, everybody good? Listen to these words from the New Living Translation, beginning at verse 18: «Then the Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone.'» Now, who is that man He’s talking about? Of course, that is Adam. When God says that his solitude is not good, we learned last week that that was more about purpose than anything else. But what I want you to focus on is how God solved this problem. When God said it’s not good for Adam to be alone, He didn’t match him with just anybody, because matches matter. The end of the verse says, «I will make a helper just right for him.» So if God made the helper just right for him, that means this is a match made in heaven. Matches matter!
Alright, before you sit down, if you’re in the chat, I want you to type this. If you’re near somebody and standing up in one of our locations, I want you to say this to the person closest to you. You ready? Say this to them: «Don’t play with matches!» Don’t play with matches! Don’t play with matches! Do not play with matches!
You may be seated. The phrase «don’t play with matches» has been around for as long as I can remember. It is literally a warning—particularly for kids—to not play with something that could harm them. Fire lighters and matches can be harmful to both people and property, and that is the original intent of the statement. It could be fatal to play with matches. But I want to steal that phrase for homiletical purposes today, and I want to change the intent and the meaning of that statement from its original state to talk about how dangerous it is to play with relationship matches.
Now, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, all you have to do is experience a bad relationship, and you know that matches matter. Just like playing with matches can create a fire, playing with the wrong relationship match can mess up your life. One bad relationship can take your joy away, rob your peace of mind, and mess you up financially. Some of these relationships are now ending people’s lives.
I plead with you right now, before I go one step further, if you’re listening to this on the radio, if you’re watching this broadcast wherever you are right now, I plead with you: do not play with matches! Don’t play with matches! Whether it’s something you’re trying to hook yourself up with or someone else, I know how we always try: «I’ve got somebody for you.» Don’t play with matches; you might ruin their lives and get them hooked up with someone they will never recover from.
I’m not saying you can never introduce people to each other, but we need to let God bring people together because He knows what is just right for us.
So I want to look at the relationship between Adam and Eve and give some observations, and then I’m going to let you go because we’ve already held you long enough. The first thing I want to talk about is what I’m going to call «matology.» Now, whenever I don’t know what point I want to make, I just put «ology» on the end of a word, and it makes it sound deeper, you know? «Matology.»
Now, when you go back to Genesis 2:18 and look at what God did for him before Adam got his wife, first of all, look at everything he had. Look at everything he had in place: he had a job, he had a purpose, he had a relationship with God, a relationship with the animal world, and he had dominion over the animals. He had named the animals. If you want to know authority and dominion, it comes by the person who named the thing. When Eve came along, he named her too. That’s just it. Don’t leave, though! I know you think that men aren’t the head, but it’s still in the Bible. You can’t cancel that.
