Jeremiah 1:6 says, «Alas, Sovereign Lord, I don’t know how to speak; I’m too young.» But the Lord said to me, «Don’t say I’m too young. You must go to everyone I send you and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you, ” declares the Lord. I want to pause for a moment and tag a title to this text. I want to talk from this subject today: „Our Arresting Insecurity, Part 2.“ If you’re old school, this is the remix. It’s the remix! In Jeremiah chapter 1, we get to eavesdrop on a conversation that God is having with a gentleman named Jeremiah. It’s a unique conversation; it’s a critical conversation, a key conversation because it’s about something that I believe all of us—at least most of us—want to get right. It is a conversation regarding calling. Now, last week, we defined calling for you, and we said calling is God’s invitation for your participation in the reason for your creation. I’ll say it again: it’s God’s invitation for your participation in the reason for your creation. It is when God extends an invitation to you and me and gives us the ability to freely accept it or reject it, and that invitation is to live our life, watch this, according to His creative intent. In other words, when God calls you, He shows you what He created you for and then gives us free will—the choice to say, „I will“ or „I won’t“ use my life in a way that is consistent with what you called me to. Calling, calling, calling, calling, calling, calling, calling—you can get your outfit wrong, but don’t get your calling wrong. You can get the car choice wrong, but don’t get your calling wrong. You can get the career choice wrong, but don’t get your calling wrong. You can’t get your calling wrong and life right. I’m going to say that again: you can’t get your calling wrong and life right. If there is anything we need to be clear on, it’s not just clothes, cribs, and cars; we need to be clear on our calling. Or, as one writer said, we will spend our entire life climbing to the top of a ladder only to recognize, when we get there, that we leaned it against the wrong wall. Whew! What a tragedy to live most of your life before figuring out what you were supposed to do with it. Calling is God’s invitation for your participation in the reason for your creation, and when we look at this critical conversation God is having with Jeremiah about calling, we learn some things about calling that I think will help us accurately understand it. One of the first truths we see in the text when He engages with Jeremiah is this: He says, „Jeremiah, before I formed you in your mother’s womb, I knew you. Your parents made you; they conceived you, but I crafted you.“ In other words, I knew what I was building you for, so I placed everything in you by design, with intentionality, so that you would not have any deficit in an area where you needed it, where you didn’t need a deficit to do what I called you to do and be what I called you to be. This means that even with God, He is sovereign over your brokenness, meaning the areas where you are weak. You don’t have to—you all are not talking to me—the areas where you are weak; you don’t have to mull over those areas and have inferior viewpoints on your own value and worth when it comes to that area, ‘cause you’re strong where He needed you to be strong and you’re sharp where He needed you to be sharp, and everything that needed to be in you, He deposited. Now, it’s your job to develop it. I feel that right there! I believe this is a development season for somebody. I said everything you need is deposited in you from birth, but it has to be developed. Good gracious alive! This is not the season; this is not the time to waste time. Time is the currency you must exchange for the product of your purpose. I must say it again: if purpose is going to be accomplished, it’s going to be accomplished because you steward your time strategically and intentionally in a way that aligns with the call of God on your life. Many people become obsessed—I don’t know why I’m going here; I told you I’m just getting old, so I’m shooting straight—and many people become obsessed with entertainment in seasons where God wants them to undergo an evolution. Did you hear what I just said? Because God—I want you to catch this—God knows what needs to be developed before you get to certain doors. I’m going to say it again: God knows what needs to be developed before you reach certain doors. God knows the time in your life when you’re going to fight Goliath, so He starts burdening your heart to play with your slingshot before then. By the time you hit that point in your life where you have to fight Goliath, you have already mastered the slingshot. Many people, when they should be mastering their slingshot, are watching everybody else master theirs. Preach, Darius! In a time when they should be mastering their own craft and undergoing their own evolution, they are obsessed with entertainment, watching everybody else build theirs when you should be building yours. But I believe God is coming for you today. He’s coming for your edges; He’s coming for your confidence.
