Ephesians chapter 3, verse 20 says, «Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.» I want to speak from this subject in our time together tonight: I’m not greedy; I’m hungry. I’m not greedy; I’m hungry. For those of you who are unaware, each year our church adopts a theme that describes an area of emphasis for our organization. This year, we chose a theme that we believe depicts and describes what God wants to do in us, through us, and for us. This theme is captured in one word, and the word is «more.» I want to know if there’s anyone under the sound of my voice who is unashamedly expecting God to do more in 2020. If you are, shout «more!»
Now, I am aware that the enthusiastic expression of our expectation for more evokes a number of different emotions in the room. Some people may struggle with the idea of honestly admitting that they’re expecting more, especially in a church context. Some may feel that honestly admitting they expect more is self-serving, selfish, unappreciative, or discontent. Some may even go so far as to say it’s greedy. For those who hold that position and share that sentiment, no judgment from me; I’m not judging you, but I would like the opportunity to explain why some of us in this room have absolutely no hesitation, no apprehension, and no timidity in expressing our expectation for more in 2020. It’s because we recognize the difference between being greedy and being hungry.
I’m not greedy; I’m hungry. You see, greed is wanting more than what God has for me, but hunger is wanting all God has for me. Let’s say it again: greed is wanting more than what God has for me, but hunger is wanting all God has for me. I believe there are some people in this place who, now that you’ve seen that definition, know how to properly classify and categorize yourself. You recognize that you don’t want anything God doesn’t want for you. Some of us are in a season where we can say, «I don’t even want anything that requires me to be someone other than who God has created me to be.» I don’t want a relationship where I have to be someone other than me. I don’t want an opportunity that requires me to be someone other than me. If God sent it to me, He’s sending it to me for me, which is not going to require me to be anyone else but me. So if me isn’t enough, then it’s not for me.
I don’t want more than what God has for me; I want all that God has for me. Is there anybody here that wants all in every area? Say, «I want all in my mind! I want all in my career! I want all with my emotions! I want all with my ministry!» I refuse to put a period where God wants to put a comma, and I refuse to allow other people with low expectations to hold me hostage to their expectations for my life and not God’s calling on my life. I want more! Let me hear the church say «more!» When we say we want more, we are simply saying, «I want my Metron.» Does everybody see Metron?
Somebody in the back was like, «Megatron? Is he preaching on Transformers?» No, no, not Megatron, Metron. What’s the Metron? I’m Pastor Darius. It’s a word that the Apostle Paul uses in 2 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 12. He’s writing to a group of believers in Corinth. Check this out, fam; this is what he says: «We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.» May in 2020 you cease comparing yourself to people who are not created to do what you’re called to do.
He says, «We will, however, not boast beyond proper limits but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God Himself has assigned to us, a sphere that also includes you.» That word «sphere» is a Greek word, Metron, and it means a sphere or circle of influence that God has predetermined. Listen to this: the audience for your anointing, your gifting, your capability, your influence has an audience. You are not for everybody, but you are for somebody, and these somebodies represent your Metron.
When Jesus sent His disciples out in Matthew 10 two by two, He gave them insight on how to handle people that were not within their sphere of influence. He said if you go to a village or a city and the people don’t receive you, this is what you do: He says, «Go out into the street, „—don’t do this for real—“and shake the dust off your feet.“ Here it is: What is He teaching them to do? He’s teaching them not to wear the rejection that comes from people who are not the audience for your anointing. When He says to shake the dust off, He’s saying do not take the rejection of some people in your past into your future. For everyone who will not listen, value your insight, and input, I’ve got some people assigned…
