There’s Palm Sunday, and I have a message for you found in the Gospel of Matthew. The word «gospel» simply means good news, so the gospel about Jesus from Matthew’s perspective begins in Matthew chapter 21, verse one. It says: «As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, 'Go ahead to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell them that the Lord, or the Master, needs them, and he will send them right away.'» I want to speak on this subject during our time together today: «The Master Needs You.»
Ladies and gentlemen, for the past few weeks, we have been encouraging all of us to stay in the house. As I mentioned in my preliminary remarks, when I refer to staying in the house, I am not talking about being in a building physically; I am referring to being in God’s presence spiritually. I am not discussing the position of our bodies, but rather the posture of our hearts. I am encouraging us not to allow this pandemic, or what some are calling an epidemic, to cause us to exit the presence of God because God is the only one who can provide the real answer to this aggravating issue.
The question I want to attempt to answer today is: Why? I told you that you need to stay in the house; peace is in the house, provisions are in the house, and protection is in the house. However, there’s something I saw in the text that I want to share with you, and I won’t keep you long. I believe we need to stay in the house because the text teaches us that the Master needs you.
Oh yes, I’m sure we are familiar with frequently hearing how much we need God, and oh, do we need Him. The Bible says it is in Him that we live, move, and have our being. There’s a songwriter who said, «I’m nothing without Him.» The Apostle Paul states, «I am what I am by the grace of God.» I believe if I sent out a poll asking everyone to testify, I would receive some consistency in communication from you, because many of us in this room would have to testify like Paul: Not only am I what I am by the grace of God, I am where I am by the grace of God, and I have what I have because of the grace of God. Since God has done everything for me, I believe I must give all the praise to Him.
On this Palm Sunday, right in your kitchen, you should pause for a moment and give God praise for His goodness. We need Him; we know we need Him. We need Him not just spiritually, but also mentally—when our minds are bombarded with complex decisions that we are faced with. It’s not black or white, right or wrong; should I do this or should I do that? I need wisdom beyond my own expertise. I need wisdom that can only come from heaven, wisdom from above. I need to hear from someone who is smarter than me and is not limited by the reality of my own limitations. You can see today, but He can see tomorrow. You can see to the hill, but He can see over the hill. You can see to the corner, but He can see around the corner. We need insight from the One who can see things that you and I cannot see.
Talk to me, please. We need Him mentally, and we need Him relationally. You know you’ve been in that house with your kids and your spouse, and you see some imperfections that you didn’t know existed because you hadn’t been this close for this long. You notice things that only God can fix. You can talk about it; you can pontificate about it, but only God can perfect it. Yes, there are some problems that are jobs for God. You can point out what’s wrong, but you can’t fix it. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. God has to put the will on the inside of them. We need Him.
We are not debating or arguing whether we need Him. I am saying that the text teaches us that God—who needs nothing from no one—decided He needed you. Did you hear what I just said? The God who needs nothing chose to need us. He said, 'I’m going to use you, and I’m going to use you in a way that I don’t use any other part of creation.'
