Listen, each year, so many people set goals, make resolutions, and even make promises to themselves that they are unable to keep. Here’s the issue: many of those people don’t know why. In this video, I am going to share with you the one reason most people don’t reach their goals. Let’s go! Listen, man, we’ve all been there. It’s a new year; we’ve got visions, dreams, goals, and aspirations. We’re excited about our goals; we’re posting our goals and pictures of ourselves going to the gym. We’re attending vision board parties. Come on, I get it, man! I am one of them. Each year, I write my goals down. I have different goals in different areas. But here’s something that I’ve noticed in my own life, and I’m going to be honest with you. This is something I see in the lives of most people, at least in my sphere of influence. I don’t know everybody, but I’m speaking about the people in my sphere of influence. Most people don’t reach their goals, but they don’t know why. Now, watch this: when I say they don’t know why, I’m not saying they don’t have a reason. I’m saying the reason isn’t always correct. «Why didn’t you reach your goals?» «Well, I didn’t try hard enough.» «Why didn’t you reach your goals?» «I’m not disciplined enough.» «Why didn’t you reach your goals?» «Nobody would help me.» «Why didn’t you reach your goals?» «I just got tired.» «Why didn’t you reach your goals?» «Life was lifeing.» And I’m not saying all of those aren’t things that contribute to people not reaching their goals, but listen to me, generally speaking, that’s not the real reason people don’t reach their goals. One reason people do not reach their goals is simply this: they don’t understand the difference between pleasure and happiness. You need to get this. I’m actually going to be doing a webinar really soon called «Reclaiming Your Year,» where I’m going to share four keys. You have to catch this; I’m going to provide you with four keys to make up for lost time and finish your year strong. Listen to what happens almost every year: when people don’t reach their goals, they just give up on them and say, «Oh well, next year I’ll do better.» It’s like, wait a minute! There are four more months left in this year—120 days! There are 365 or 366 days in a year. You mean you’re literally about to give up on your goals when you have a third of the year left? You don’t have to do that! You can reclaim your year. So, you have to be a part of this webinar if you want to learn these four keys. It’s going to be absolutely free; I want to help people finish the year strong. But anyway, the point I’m making is that the reason most people don’t succeed is that they don’t understand the difference between pleasure and happiness. «Darris, what do you mean?» Well, I’m using the word «pleasure» to refer to something that is temporarily pleasant to me—something that I find enjoyable in the short term. I’m using «happiness» to describe an emotion I can sustain long term. I’ll say that again: happiness is an emotion I can sustain long term. And so, when I confuse pleasure with happiness, it becomes absolutely impossible to reach my goals. «Okay, Darris, what do you mean by that?» All right, this is what I mean. Real quick, give me a second. Question for you: Do you want more peace? Do you want to be more productive? Do you want more purpose in your life? Do you want to be more profitable? If so, I can help you! I’ve got a mentoring and coaching group called «Daniel’s Den.» I want you to go to danielsden.com to find out more. I’ll see you in the deal. Let’s take, for example, a person with body goals. They want to steward their temple well because they know that everything God is going to do in their life, primarily, He’s going to use this body to do it. This body is your instrument; it’s what God is going to use to accomplish His purpose in your life. Let’s say there’s some value there: it’s like, «Yo, I want to add value, so I want to steward my body well.» But let’s also say there’s a bit of vanity—“I just want to look good; I want to like what I see.» Let’s be honest: there’s nothing wrong with that! I’m calling it vanity; I don’t think it’s vain; it’s just a goal. If you’re defining your worth by that, then that’s vanity. If your whole sense of self is tied up in how you look, that’s vanity. However, it is not vain to have an aesthetic goal. Some people have financial goals; some have professional goals. A financial goal might be how much money they want to make, and a professional goal could be how far they want to go in their career. Some people have aesthetic goals; they want to look a certain way. There’s nothing wrong with that! So, let’s say a person has one of those goals: «Yo, I just want to look good, and liking the way I look is not going to be the source of my happiness, but it may contribute to my happiness.» Why? Because it’s eliminating things or creating fewer obstacles that can actually make me unhappy.
