John K. Jenkins Sr - Who's Your Daddy?

Okay, open your Bibles with me to John chapter 8, and I know they read earlier today verses 12-19, but I’m going to pick up at verse 25. I’m going to pick up at John 8, verse 25. Then they said to him, «Who are you?» And Jesus said to them, «Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he who sent me is true, and I speak to the world those things which I heard from him.» They did not understand that he spoke to them of the Father. Then Jesus said to them, «When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I speak these things. And he who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please him.» Amen.

On this Father’s Day, I want to talk from the subject, «Who 's your daddy?» Look at your neighbor and ask the question, «Who 's your daddy?» Look on the other side and ask the person there, «Who is your daddy?» In this particular passage we are reading, Jesus is talking to the Pharisees; they are the religious elite of their day. They are people who thought they had it all together and put themselves in a position of being greater, better, and higher than others. But Jesus has a conversation with them and shares some truth about them, and ultimately he’s asking them about their father. He 's talking to them about his Father, and they think he’s talking about his earthly father, but he’s talking about his spiritual Father. Some of you are here today, and many of you don’t know who your biological father might be. Maybe he didn’t want to know you, or you didn’t know who he was. Maybe he disappeared or escaped; I don’t know what the drama for some of you has been in your life. But here’s what I do know: even though you may not know who your biological father might be, I’m here to tell everybody you can have a spiritual Father who will look after you and take care of you. As a matter of fact, while Jesus is talking to them about this, he says to them in verse 59, look at verse 59 for just a moment. But before I go to verse 59, let me read verse 44. Can you turn to verse 44? Look at what Jesus says to them while he’s talking to them about fatherhood: «You are of your father, the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.» Do you all see that? Yes, sir! He tells these people, «The devil is your daddy.» And in verse 59, because he said that, look — are you with me? In verse 59, they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. They wanted to kill him because he said their daddy is the devil. Here 's the truth of the matter. Let me give you a nutshell of what I’m going to talk about with you today because I want to tell you clearly that you can tell who you are based on your actions, and you are a reflection of your daddy. Maury Povich used to have a television program. How many of you know who Maury Povich is? Yeah. Maury Povich had a show that lasted on TV for about 31 years. He came on and made a lot of money asking one lone statement to men: «You are the father .» He would make that statement; they’d run the DNA test, and when it came back that this man was the father, he’d say, «And you are the father!» Wow! Now, what often happened is sometimes the women would be shocked and amazed when he said, «You are not the father,» and the woman would grab her head and run off the stage. «Ah!» Now, what kind of woman doesn’t know who her baby daddy is? I hesitated to tell the 9:00 crowd that, but I thought I could tell the 11:30 crowd; I thought y’all could accept that a little more freely. But the fact of the matter is, what kind of woman doesn’t know who the father is? Here 's the fact, here’s the problem, and here’s what I want to talk about with you today: Jesus is saying, «I am a reflection of my Father. I am who I am because of who my Father is.» I want to ask the question, «What is your lifestyle demonstrating about who your father might be?» Because sometimes women would be confused or they 'd say, «Yeah, I know he 's the daddy; his eyes are just like his father’s eyes. His nose looks just like his dad’s.» And then she found out later that he wasn’t. But here’s the fact of the matter: you are a reflection of whoever calls the shots in your life, whoever is your boss; whoever your daddy is, you are a reflection of your father.
