Open your Bibles to Psalm 119. The 119th Psalm is a quarter to one. Y’all know you are perpetrators; y’all perpetrate. I want to give you a little history about the 119th Psalm. Before I go there, I want to talk about the Word. That 's what I want to do today: talk about why I love the Word. If I could, uh, title this message, I would call it «Why I Delight in and Love God’s Word and Why You Should Too.» That 's what I want to discuss: why I delight in the Word, why I love the Word, and why you ought to do the same. I’m grateful for these teachers and individuals who make our church a teaching church. Your life will be changed and transformed when you get the Word in your life. This Psalm 119 was written-let me slow down; there’s no need to rush. There isn 't another service.
It has 176 verses and is the longest chapter in the Bible. We don’t know who wrote it; we suspect David, but he never identifies himself as the writer, so we’re not totally sure. We believe it was written in segments over the course of his lifetime. This person, who writes this 119th Psalm, reflects on his journey with God. He wrote one section at one point in his life and another section at a different juncture, capturing his experiences. So, it is a compilation of a lifetime of experiences with God. It 's profound because through all 176 verses, all but one mention the significance of the Word. Who started that clap? Who started-oh, thank you! I love you very much. Thank you! That 's a profound thing! This man writes 176 verses, and in every verse, he says something about the Word.
Now, he uses different terminology; he might call it the Law in one place, or judgments, testimonies, commandments, precepts, statutes, the way, or the Word. He calls it different things, but the bottom line is he focuses on significant topics about God’s Word. I find that amazing, profound, and very significant. It’s important and powerful because he recognizes the impact that the Word has on our lives. Our lives are changed; somebody look at your neighbor and say, «Your life will change when you get the Word in it!» This Psalm focuses on the benefits of having the Word govern your life. It 's an important matter.
As a matter of fact, the author of this Psalm has faced persecution. He’s been talked about, ridiculed, and put to shame. They 've sought to make him quit and give up his faith. He has faced bondage; princes and kings have talked about him, and his enemies have tried to get him to change his mind. But through all of this, he has remained focused on trusting the Word. I felt I ought to discuss this because some of you need to recognize-and I need you to understand-that the enemy’s goal is to get you to a place in your life where you stop believing the Word, where you doubt the Word, where you question the Word, where you get critical of the Word, where you don’t believe the Word. But we aim to drill the Word into you so that no matter what you go through, nothing can shake it loose from you.
No matter how badly they talk about it, no matter how many lies they tell about you, no matter what suggestions they make to you, our hope is that your confidence in your walk with the Word, your belief in the Word, your confidence in the Word, and your willingness to obey the Word are so profound that nothing can make you doubt it. Now, I don’t know where y’all are, but you can’t make me doubt God! I’ve seen Him work too many miracles in my life. I’ve had Him answer too many of my prayers. I’ve had too many victories; I’ve had too many wins. Nothing can come into my life to make me question Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God-that He died on the cross for my sins, that He was buried, and that He rose again. You can’t make me question Him; you can’t make me doubt Him. Look at your neighbor and say, «You can’t make me doubt Him!» Tell them on the other side, «You can’t make me doubt.»
So, what I want to talk to you about for just a few minutes that I have remaining-8 minutes-I want to give you three reasons why I delight in the Word and love the Word. There are more reasons in this 119th Psalm, but I want to focus on just three.
