Yesterday I was in Hebrews, chapter 10, verse 22 and let me go back to that verse and start there today. It says, "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water". Now again, you've got to take all of this in its context and in the previous verses he says that we have boldness to enter into the very holy of holies... A statement that was I mean it was blasphemy to the people who lived under the law. You could not do that but through the blood of Jesus, we had a new and living way that we can enter right into the holy of holies through the flesh of Jesus. When his flesh was broken, the veil was torn in two and we now have access to God. He is our new high priest and now we can draw near! We don't have to be aloof and apart from God.
We can draw near and I just want to point out what Hebrews 10:22 does not say. You know, this may be kind of backwards thinking to some people but if I was to ask you what you have to do to get really close to God, to draw near to God, and if I was to just ask you what would you say? I can guarantee you, the majority of people would immediately say well man, I need to quit doing this or this. I need to quit doing these things. I need to love God more. I need to confess my sin. I need to do all of these things and we would start pointing to external things because we think that God loves us when we're worth loving and when we mess up, God is the one that kind of keeps us at arm's length. He won't bless us. He won't release his joy in our life. So it reflects our performance-based relationship. We believe that we have to confess all of our sins.
The average person, when you come to pray and fellowship with the Lord, the very first thing you start doing is come in and you start mentioning all of you sins, thinking that if you will mention your sins, maybe God won't mention them. But notice this verse doesn't say any of these things. This is talking about drawing near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, it's not talking about that you've got to have everything right in your life, but you've got to be believing and putting your faith in a Savior. Your faith has to be strong in him and you have to have your heart sprinkled from an evil conscience. This is talking about the renewing of your mind and getting rid of the condemnation that people and that the devil release toward you, and sad to say, most of us condemn ourself!
