The Bible is full of various stories, many of which reflect and share how God helped somebody in desperate need ; someone who was sick and needed to be healed, someone who was broke and needed money , or someone who died and needed life. It's full of these kinds of stories. This is no different. This story here in Second Kings tells the account of a woman whose husband was a minister, a prophet in training. While he was in school , he died while studying at the School of the Prophets of Elisha. He left behind a wife and children and had incurred debt. The creditor is now coming to the widow, demanding payment. As a matter of fact, the creditor has told her that if she doesn't have the money to pay the debt, he will take her sons captive and make them slaves until the debt is paid. I want every woman to look at your husband , if he's nearby , and tell him to make sure he leaves enough insurance to cover any debts you have when he dies. Go ahead, tell him. The Bible says that a man who does not take care of his household is worse than an infidel. This means that if you do not care for their needs while you are alive and after you have passed on, you are worse than an infidel. I don't want to be an infidel, so I have made provisions that when I die, my wife will be well taken care of. She 'll cry for a minute ; she'll grieve during the funeral, but when she goes home, she will be smiling. Amen. I'm not leaving the responsibility for the care of my family to my wife or the church; that's my responsibility. Yes, that's my responsibility. I 've already told her, just put it on record , so you all can back me up. If something happens to me, she is going to be fine. If she brings another man into the house, I'm coming back from the grave ! Can I get an amen from anybody here? This woman is in a devastating situation ; she's really in a dramatic circumstance with debt she cannot pay . So, she goes to the prophet and explains her situation. He asks her what he can do for her and then poses a pertinent question : "What do you have in your house ?" This is an important question because what will bring her deliverance is in her house. It 's crucial for you and me to understand that your deliverance, what you need for your breakthrough , is somewhere in your home. I don't have time to elaborate on that, but I will come back and teach on it one day soon. She responds, " I don't have anything except a jar of oil. That 's all I have." The prophet then gives her some instructions. Let me say at the outset - not as one of my main points but it ought to be - that this woman is going to experience a supernatural provision from God. We 've already read that God is going to provide for her supernaturally. In fact , she will pour oil into vessels, and the prophet will direct her to sell it . She will sell it , and verse 7 says that the man of God told her , "Sell the oil you have , pay the debt, and live off the rest." She is going to receive such a miraculous blessing from God that not only will she pay off the debt , but she will also have enough resources for herself and her sons to live off the remainder. That 's awesome , y'all! That 's powerful! That 's incredible! Their needs are going to be met . But listen , this is important-it's not one of my main points, but I should have made it one-the key to her receiving this miracle begins with obedience. I know I'm not going to get too many shouts from the 10:00 crowd on that; they were dancing at the 8:00 service, but the 10:00 crowd is much quieter. The 12 :00 service will be even fewer! Obedience is the key to God blessing you . We live in a culture where people desire blessings without being obedient . So he gives her some instructions, and her job is to obey in order to start her miracle. He told her : in verse 3, "Go borrow vessels from everywhere , from all your neighbors-empty vessels. Do not gather just a few." The first thing he instructs her to do is to gather vessels. He tells her, "I want you to go and get vessels." This is important. He instructs her to go everywhere, not just a few places-go to your neighbors, go as far as you can, and gather vessels. Even if you have to borrow them , gather as many as you can and bring them into your house. That 's an important point. Let me tell you today, the first step to receiving your miracle and experiencing the supernatural...
