I want to read today from the book of John, chapter 9. I’m going to skip around a little bit. I really want to read the whole passage, but for the sake of time, I’m not going to do that. I am going to ask you to do that, so why don’t you just write this down? You’ll remember this week to pull up John chapter 9 so you can look into it a little closer, a little deeper, and see what God is saying specifically to you and your house through His Word.
Today, I want to begin reading John chapter 9, verse 6—I’m sorry, verse 7—and I’m going to go down to the B clause of verse 7. Well, let me just back up to verse 6. I’ll read quickly. In John 9:6, the Bible says, «Then He spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. He told him, 'Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam.'» So the man went, washed, and came back seeing. His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, «Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?» Some said he was, and others said, «No, he just looks like him.» But the beggar kept saying, «Yes, I am the same one.» They asked, «Well, who healed you, and what happened?» He told them, «The man they call Jesus made mud, spread it over my eyes, and told me to go to the pool of Siloam and wash.» So I went, washed, and now I can see.
«Well, where is he now?» they asked. «I don’t know,» he replied. Then they took the man who had been blind over to the Pharisees because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud and healed him. The Pharisees asked the man all about it. So he told them, just as he had told those in his neighborhood and those around him. He said, «He put the mud over my eyes, and when I washed it away, I could see.» Some of the Pharisees said, «This man Jesus is not from God!» Can you imagine? «This man Jesus is not from God!» People will say the craziest things. «He’s not from God because He is working on the Sabbath.» Others said, «But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?» So there was a deep division of opinion among them.
Then the Pharisees again questioned the man who had been blind and demanded, «What’s your opinion about the man who healed you?» The man who had been healed replied, «Well, I think he must be a prophet.» The Jewish leaders still refused to believe that the man had been blind and could now see. So what did they do? They called his parents. Now they’re asking his parents, and if you go down to verse 23, they said, «Well, he’s old enough; ask him. Don’t ask us.» So for the second time—though I feel like this is more than two times—they called in the man who had been blind and told him, «Give glory to God for this, because we know this man Jesus is a sinner.» «We know this man Jesus is a sinner.» Here’s what he said: «I don’t know whether he is a sinner,» the man replied, «but what I do know is this: I was blind, but now I can see.»
Well, I think this man just got tired of trying to tell the story, and he said, «You know what? You can have your opinion, and you can have your opinion, but when all is said and done, if you’re asking me, all I can tell you is I don’t know if he is a sinner or not, but what I will tell you is that I got just what I wanted from him. I got the miracle that I needed from him.» And today, that’s what I’m going to take the next few moments to talk аbout: «I’ve got just what I wanted.»
Spirit of God, thank You for Your Word and for speaking to us. Thank You for finding every person under the sound of my voice, every person leaning in today, and every person doing housework and only half-listening. Lord, may they lean into the moments You want them to hear precisely. Have Your way, Jesus. Let Your Word jump off the pages, and let it change our lives. We thank You for it in the name of Jesus. Somebody shout amen! I hear you, amen; amen.
Today, I’m talking about a blind man. Now, the Bible talks a lot about blind men. As a matter of fact, one of the miracles that Jesus performed more than any other miracle was opening the eyes of the blind. This man we are talking about, in particular, had never known what it was like to see; he had been blind his entire life. Some people who were healed had been born with sight, lost their sight, and Jesus healed their sight. But this particular man had been born blind. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he was surrounded by people who could see. So, he’s not only blind but also different from everybody around him.
