Question for you: Do you feel like you’ve been made for more? Do you believe that there’s something inside you that should be flowing outside of you? Do you realize and recognize that you’ve been created for a reason, that there’s purpose in, for, and through your life? If that’s you, and you’re serious about stepping into the more that God has for you and the more that God wants to do through you, then I need you to stay engaged with this video because I’m going to teach you the one thing you must ensure you develop if you want to walk into your destiny. There’s one thing most people are not telling you about purpose, and I’m going to share it with you in this video.
You know, as you’re watching this, I want to remind you that your purpose on this planet is not an accident. You are not the result of some cosmic coincidence. You’re not the result of some relational accident. Your parents may have been surprised by your arrival, but God wasn’t. I can say this because in Jeremiah 1, God says to Jeremiah, «Before I formed you in the mother’s womb, I knew you.» So, before you were formed, before you were conceived, I knew you. And God says, «I not only knew you, but I ordained you, or I set you apart as a prophet.» Your parents made you, Jeremiah, but I formed you. The only thing they could do was engage in the act of creating you, but they could not control whether or not you were conceived, and they could not control what your gifts, talents, personality traits, and leanings were—that was all God.
Jeremiah, you’ve been built by design. You’ve been wired for a work; you’ve been crafted, or created, for a calling. That’s not just Jeremiah’s story; that’s your story. You know that there are reasons for your existence, and God places the desire for that inside your heart. You will not be fulfilled; you will not be internally satisfied until you are doing the very things that He has called and created you to do. We call that purpose.
Now, purpose is, again, the reason for the creation or existence of a thing. Very often, people confuse purpose with roles. Roles are sets of responsibilities that God calls you to play during certain seasons of your life. For example, there was a season in my life where I was a youth pastor. What was I doing? I was faithfully responding to God’s call on my life for that particular season. Then I went from being a youth pastor to an associate pastor, working with Christian education. What was I doing? That was a role. Then I moved from that to being a church planter, and from one site to multiple sites. I transitioned again to being an author, then I became a coach and a professor. These are roles, and my willingness to keep saying yes to a role determines whether I accomplish my purpose.
So I stop walking in purpose the moment I stop saying yes when God calls me to a new role. Does that make sense? Purpose is not the role; purpose is when you carry out all the roles that God has called you to fulfill during the course of your lifetime. So you’re only walking in purpose when you keep saying yes to the different roles that God calls you to. This is important; this is key and critical because your fulfillment is tied to your faithfulness in saying yes to these roles.
There’s a way that purpose compensates you that nothing else does. Fame doesn’t do it; finances don’t do it. The highest form of compensation is fulfillment. You only get that when you’re in purpose, and you lose that fulfillment when you are in a role that God has no longer called you to occupy. See, just because it was His will doesn’t mean it still is His will. Your fulfillment is not tied to having been in His will; your fulfillment is tied to being in His will—that’s purpose.
If you’re serious about purpose, you’re going to want to lean into what I’m about to share because there’s a lot people talk about regarding purpose, but there’s one key factor that I think isn’t discussed enough. It is one of the keys that unlocks the door to God’s plan and purpose for our lives. It’s one thing that affects everything when it comes to your purpose. Many people assume that what they need for purpose is sincerity, and I’m not saying that’s incorrect; I think it’s correct. You need to be sincere. Psalm 78:72 says David shepherded Israel according to the integrity, or sincerity, of his heart. So motives do matter. Yet at the same time, you need more than sincerity to accomplish your purpose. You need more than intention; you need more than a heart that’s just right. You need to know how to do some things right.
We need more than sincerity. Here’s the one thing people are not telling you about purpose: you need skill. «Darius, what do you mean?» Yes, we need skill; we need competencies. This is important because especially in charismatic circles, there’s a lot of emphasis on the anointing, which is the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, and we cannot carry out our purpose.
